Grantham Futsal Competition a Huge Success

12 TEAMS COMPETE AT ANNUAL FUTSAL EVENT

The second edition of the Sir Isaac Newton Futsal Tournament was held at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre on Sunday 7 July, with over 100 players enjoying the fun, fast-paced format of the game.

The event, which is organised annually by Grantham United FC, saw 12 teams and over 100 players from across the country come together at a central venue for a full day of Futsal competition.

A draw night was hosted at Lincolnshire FA’s offices ahead of the competition to establish which six teams would compete in Group A, and which six teams would compete in Group B.

Each team played five games in the group stages before heading into a knock-out competition to decide who would win the three trophies on offer based on their overall finishing position.

All fixtures throughout the day were split between two futsal pitches and were overseen by five qualified futsal officials.

The eventual winners, Secapeli Utd, defeated Grimsby Futsal 6-5 on penalties after a fascinating 1-1 draw in normal time. Grimsby boasted the tournament’s top goalscorer, Matthew Payne, amongst their ranks and had beaten Secapeli 3-0 in the group stages, but back-to-back shootout saves from the Secapeli goalkeeper saw them crowned the Sir Isaac Newton 2019 futsal champions.

Other notable mentions must go to Galante Futsal Club, who beat Sheffield Futsal 2-0 to secure the cup trophy, and also to Polonia Futsal who overcame the hosts, Grantham United Futsal, by three goals to two, which saw them take home the Shield trophy.

Jake Park, Lincolnshire FA Football Development Officer, said: “Lincolnshire FA was delighted to support the delivery of this competition and the day itself was hugely successful. To have over 100 players present across 12 teams was really pleasing and the whole day was played in great spirit.

“Full credit must go to Paulo Pires of Grantham United FC and his team for their tireless hard work in the lead-up to the event, and also on the day itself. We are fortunate to have some really committed individuals driving futsal across the county, and I am looking forward to working alongside them over the coming months as we aim to increase futsal participation within Lincolnshire.”

The event was also attended by Reginald Jackson (LFA Board Member), George Richardson (LFA Council Member) and Adam Jones (Derbyshire FA).

Following the event, Reginald Jackson said: “The day for futsal competition at the Grantham Meres Leisure Centre was a great success. Never have we seen an array of teams from different areas assembled into futsal competition in Lincolnshire. Credit must go to Grantham United who organised the event and to the Lincolnshire FA for their support during the day.”
