The players visited the home of England football to launch the Continental Tyres Cup and also discussed their aims and hopes for the tournament as well as reflecting on England’s success out in Canada.

Peter Robb, Continental Tyres UK, Marketing Communications Manager, said: “Continental Tyres are delighted to be part of this exciting competition for the fifth year running, and we are looking forward to what promises to be the most successful tournament to date.

“The continual rise in attendance figures over recent tournaments clearly demonstrates the growing appetite for the Women's game in this country.

“Our fifth season brings an even bigger tournament with the addition of an extra knock out round, putting even more focus on the teams’ performance, as they compete to be in the season’s concluding cup final.”

With the Continental Tyres Cup trophy the last piece of silverware up for grabs this season, teams from both the Women’s Super League 1 and Women’s Super League 2 will be putting everything they have into the tournament to secure the title.

With those involved in the cup ranging from professional forwards with 100 international caps to goalkeepers that are full-time firefighters and only part-time footballers, the matches are often among the most intense in the calendar.

The Continental Tyres Cup, now in its fifth year, has previously been won three times by Arsenal and it was only last year that it all changed when Manchester City secured it with a 1-0 victory over the previous winners, thanks to a stunning header from Isobel Christiansen. It was the first major trophy for the club and, from the looks of the launch video, they don’t look likely to give it up easily.

Kelly Simmons, FA director of national game and women’s football, said: “We’ve looked to freshen up the competition this year and by introducing the extra knock-out stage, we think it will make the cup even more exciting for both supporters and clubs.

“Continental Tyres have been a big supporter of the women’s game since the start of the FA WSL in 2011 and we look forward to working with them this season to make this season’s competition the best yet.”

The Continental Tyres Cup kicked off last night as Aston Villa Ladies suffered a 4-0 defeat in their Group 3 opener against WSL 1 Bristol Academy at Coles Lane.

Caroline Weir’s stunning 45-yard goal, Nadia Lawrence’s finish and a brace from substitute Jade Boho-Sayo sealed victory over the WSL 2 side.
