Moulton Harrox have been crowned the 2023 Lincolnshire FA County Junior Cup champions after a nail-biting final against Wyberton FC at the Jakemans Community Stadium on Friday evening.
It comes after the two teams met for the second consecutive final in the competition, with Wyberton taking the spoils last season following a 7-0 thumping.
Moulton Harrox took the lead after 21 minutes following a well delivered ball into the Wyberton box that was steered into their own net by an unfortunate Centre Back. Despite building Wyberton pressure, Harrox held on all the way up until the 77th minute when Liam Ogden rocketed in the equaliser from the edge of the Moulton box.
Wyberton had the chance to take the lead just 7 minutes later as a handball decision went the way of the defending champions, but Ogden missed the opportunity – rattling the bar and keeping the game level.
With the game still even after 90 minutes, the final went to extra time where the drama was ramped up a notch.
In the 108th minute of the game, Liam Ogden was brought down by the Moulton keeper and given a second chance of giving Wyberton the all-important lead. This time, the chance was taken by Scott Dawson and Moulton Harrox now had a fight on their hands.
All looked done and settled, until the very last minute of added time when Declan Earth found the back of the net from close distance – sending the Jakemans Community Stadium into a frenzy and taking this year’s final to penalties.
A crucial Brendan Taylor save was enough to hand Moulton Harrox the 2023 County Junior Cup and sealed Moulton Harrox’s redemption after last season’s 7-0 disappointment.
Grant Butler from Wyberton FC was awarded Player of the Match after a defiant performance, and the match was officiated by Jack Hennell, Will Vickers, Ryan Calvert, and Callum Everatt.
